Legacy of Dieter Cheng – Master Goldsmith

Special Jewelry Auction
Dieter Cheng: The Jeweler of Jewelers
Dieter Cheng, of Chinese and German descent, was a master goldsmith whose passion for transforming precious metals into unique pieces made him an emblematic figure in the world of jewelry in Mexico.
Goldsmithing —that delicate and demanding craft requiring precision, patience, and artistic sensitivity— was, for Cheng, much more than a profession: it was his way of life. Each piece carried the imprint of his innate talent and his relentless pursuit of perfection. In his work, beauty did not lie solely in the design, but also in the artisanal mastery that sustained it, elevating every creation to the category of art.
Born on October 12, 1931, in Beijing, China, to a Chinese father and a German mother, Cheng grew up between two cultures that shaped and enriched his artistic and personal vision. In 1936, his family moved to Germany, where he would later develop his professional training.
Between 1946 and 1949, he studied at the prestigious Goldschmiedeschule mit Uhrmacherschule Pforzheim (Pforzheim School of Jewelry), renowned for its excellence in teaching the applied arts of precious metals. There, he consolidated the foundations of a craft that would accompany him throughout his life.
In 1950, he began his professional career as a goldsmith, marking the start of a path that would establish him as a true reference in his field. His name and legacy remain synonymous with excellence, artistic sensitivity, and a deep passion for jewelry.
